Pulau Redang I Geography I Dive Sites I

Picture
Locally known as Pulau Redang or just "Redang" is one of the largest islands off the east coast of Malaysia. It is one of nine islands, which form a marine park, and which offer snorkeling and diving opportunities. Access is from Merang or Kuala Terengganu on boats operated by the resorts. Redang Airport is a small airport with services operated by Berjaya Air from Singapore (Changi Airport) and Kuala Lumpur (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport).
The Pulau Redang archipelago comprises Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau Paku Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Ling and Pulau Pinang. Pulau Redang is the biggest of all the islands in the Marine Park, measuring about 7 km long and 6 km wide. Its highest peak is Bukit Besar at 359 metres above sea level. The boundary of the Pulau Redang Marine Park is established by a line linking all points 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) from the shores of Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Ekor Tebu and Pulau Pinang.

Most of the dive sites are located on the eastern part of the island and it takes 5 - 10 minutes with boat from the dive centre. Dive sites are good for all levels / experience divers which is normally around 10m - 30m depth. Besides leisure diving it is a fantastic place to learn dive with its clear water & diversity of marine life from big pelagic, schooling fishes, various invertebrates & reef fishes.

Generally there are 2 types of reef when exploring the dive sites here:
- Fringing Reef
- Patch I Submerged Reef

Fringing Reef
Occur in shallow water near land. Typically they extend to depths of 10m - 30m depending on factors such as profile & depth of the seabed. Many mainland coastlines in South East Asia are too close to river estuaries for reefs to develop, and instead support stands of mangroves ( another marine ecosystem of enormous importance in the region. But the offshore islands, away from the influence of massive freshwater run-off often surrounded by reefs. In Pulau Redang a large proportion of reefs are of this type.

Patch I Submerged Reef
In theory reef can develop anywhere that the underlying rock has at some time been close enough to the surface for corals to become established & grow. Such patch reef are widespread throughout Pulau Redang in relatively shallow waters surrounding the island. They vary in size from tens to hundreds of meters in diameter, usually with their tops coming to within a few meters of the surface & are topped by sand cays.
Top Dive Sites

House Reef
A shore dive site located around 100 meters from the dive centre with shallow fringing reef. Wonderful location for entree level Discover Scuba Diving. With its white sandy beach & crystal clear water makes it a perfect area for dive trainings. Maximum depth here would be 8 meters during high tide. You could also do night dive here with encountering unexpected nocturnal critters. The resort jetty is also and ideal location for dive course confined water & also offers idealistic wide angle photography.

Terumbu Che Isa I Minimount
Our favourite dive site suitable for beginners & also for experience divers. Duration of 5 minutes speed boat ride from the dive centre. Considered the best submerged reef by experts with granite boulders & reef build up from the tip around 5 meters all the way to the 18 meters sea bed. With various corals, nudibranch, schooling reef fish & ocassionally the pelagics makes this reef a must for first timers here. For experience divers exploring the sandy area for rarities is worth it. Great news for  photographers, you'll never go wrong wheter it's wide angle or macro!

Stinger Reef I Karang Laut Cina Terjun
Established as a dive site in April 2000. It is discovered following information given by local islander ( Mat Nawi ). Exploration dives were held by local instructors Anuar Abdullah, Adrin "Macha" Abdul Razak & their Dutch counterpart Anja. No other dive centre had a clue there was a "Bombshell" site at that heavely traffic area.
With only a 17 footer fibreglass boat equiped with 15HP outboard they begin exploring the site everyday when it's slack tide or the best is during flooding as it is sheltered. Many scorpionfishes ( a few species of lionfishes too...Stingers ) were encountered on the main reef around 12 meters depth. Further explorations to the scattered coral heads rewards them more macro species of Banded Boxer shrimps, Cleaner Shrimps, Hingebeak shrimps, various pipefishes, nudibranches, schooling Giant Puffers, Spot face Moray, White eyed Moray and the conclusion it is a massive "Cleaning Station". In the following years more divers frequented this reef & some claimed discovery of this reef & named it after themselves.
Nevertheless it is a magical site for photographers snapping their macro subjects!

Terumbu Kili
Located in the south of Pulau Pinang, the southern most island in the Pulau Redang archipelago. A rocky outcrop separated by a shallow channel from Pulau Pinang. A gentle slope in the west side that reaches the reef crest at 20 meters. Due to its location location, Terumbu Kili is ocasionally exposed to strong currents. deeper in the reef crest Harp corals & seawhips are more dominant suggesting the area exposure to the oceanic currents. Spending more time at shallow reef will offer divers to cover the whole outcrop. Check out the resident turtles here & Black tip shark near the pinnacle. A large school of Bigeye Snappers can be found just outside the channel.

Southern Tip I Pulau Lima
WIth a boat ride of 20 minutes there's another island in the Pulau Redang archipelago called Pulau Lima. Located at the southern tip of it is a site with a combo of coral slope & deeper submerged rocks. Reaching the bottom divers may proceed with the dive following the gentle slope to 15 meters. It gets deeper on the seaward side with the reef crest at 20 meters. Contains huge diversity of marine life here including the Yellow Faced Angelfish, Barracudas & Blue Fin Trevallies. It is also home the Green Turtles & Black Tip Reef Shark.

Tanjung Tokong
Also known as Turtle Bay located on the northern headland of the island which is one of the most ecologically hectic reef. This is due to the prevailling currents that are constantly active in this area. Besides that the occasional encounter with Whale Shark at the deep end of Tanjung Tokong makes divers eager to visit this site. Maximum depth at the outer reef is approx. 32 meters.

Karang Laut Cupak I Anemone City
Locally known as Karang Cupak or in English "Trevally Reef" is the most southern most submerged bank reef in Pulau Redang. Journey takes 10 - 15 minutes from our dive centre. It is densely colonized by sea anemone at the shallowest part of the reef around 8 - 12 meters & the sandy bottom surrounding this reef is in approx. 28 meters. When the enviromental conditions are right, diving can be excelent here. Anemone fishes that can be seen here are Clarks, False Clownfish, Pink Anemonefish, Tomato Anemonefish & the Three Spotted Dascyllus. Schools of trevally & Yellowtail Barracudas can also be encountered hovering at the reef crest. This reef is also paraded by Yellowtail Fusiliers & a huge number of Bigeye Snapper. There has been sightings of Eagle Ray at this site every year.
